Botanic Gardens by Hedzlynn Kamaruzzaman

£40.00

Hedzlynn Kamaruzzaman is an artist and graphic designer from Malaysia and based in Cambridge. We are selling a limited edition print of her analogue photograph from the Botanical Gardens in Cambridge. Kamaruzzaman says ‘capturing things through my film camera has taught me to have a lot of fun, slow down, and appreciate every imperfection each shot holds.’

‘Botanic Gardens’ is printed at the highest standard of glicée printing on Hahnemühle Bamboo (90% Bamboo fibres). Dimensions 400×266mm.

‘The idea of organicity is something I tend to explore a lot in my work, whether it's the movements, moments, words or typefaces. During my time at university, I spent a lot of my time in the letterpress studio. And now I see typefaces, text and human figures all as characters in a story. I see the different energy every typeface gives, and this is similar to photos – there are wordless stories.’

Her photography is also an attempt at the cinematic, as in Botanic Gardens. A film buff who also uses archives to find stills from lesser-known films, her mind draws on this unconscious archive when moving through the world with a camera.

‘One thing that film photography has taught me is slowing down.Sometimes I miss moments as people are moving, but you still get to capture how organic the moment is. For example, if that bike is not in frame straight away, you have to wait for it. Shooting on film has also taught me to appreciate the imperfections in this world. It’s similar to printmaking, there might not be enough pressure on the ink. With both, the blurriness can be a vibe.’

‘For Botanic Gardens, I was just walking in the area and found a perfect frame and coincidentally, the figures were there. I wish I knew them and could send this picture to them. At the end of the day, it’s just capturing whatever I see. I doubt myself so much when I take pictures but then again, I never know till the photos come back from the lab – most of the time, they turn out great! The theme for that issue of Seedlings was ‘Rebirth’ and this picture was taken during the cherry blossom, so April of 2023 or ‘22. The trees were being reborn.’
